1956. The chief of police, Colonel Marcaise Prosper, tried to take the lead of
the army:
A close friend of General Paul Eugène Magloire, the president who had handed over his
resigned the day before, Colonel Marcaisse Prosper, then commander of the
Port-au-Prince police department, failed in its attempt to take the
head of the army for Magloire’s benefit. He immediately had to take refuge in
an embassy before flying to Jamaica, which welcomed him as
political refugee.
Other supporters of the deposed government, including the prefect of Port-au-Prince,
sought refuge in embassies.
1956. Departure for exile of Paul Eugène Magloire:
President Paul Eugène Magloire, who had just resigned for a second
times resigned himself to leave for exile. He first stayed in Jamaica, went
then in France before settling in the United States where he remained until his return in
after the fall of Jean-Claude Duvalier.
