1971. François Duvalier appointed his son Jean-Claude Duvalier as his
successor.
In his speech at the beginning of the year, the president for life announced his
intention to propose as his successor "a citizen who has been able to follow closely
the affairs of government" and thus "capable of ensuring the sustainability of the
Revolution." That day, the Haitians discovered that this citizen was none other than
his son who, according to the 1964 Constitution in force, had not reached majority.
The ratification referendum was set for the 31st of the same month.
