1956: Death of Cléante Desgraves-Valcin in Port-au-Prince
Poet, novelist and Haitian suffragette, Cléante Valcin, née Desgraves of a
American mother and a Haitian father, stood out above all through her actions in
in favor of Haitian women and her fight for their voting rights.
Ligue féminine de l'Action sociale and co-founder of the feminist newspaper Voix des
Women, she also left to posterity two novels (Cruelle Destinée; 1929.
La Blanche Négresse; 1934), a collection of poems (Fleurs et Pleurs; 1924) and
short stories published under the title Deux héroïnes (1989).
