1676. Death of Bertrand d'Ogéron, governor of Île de la Tortue:
Born in Rochefort sur Loire on March 19, 1613, Bertrand d'Ogéron after having been
captain in the Marine Regiment, embarked for the Antilles in 1657 and made
shipwreck in Saint-Domingue. He stayed there and became a buccaneer. Leader of the first
French establishment on the island, he organized the small colony composed
adventurers accustomed to living on the fringes of an organized society and therefore not inclined
to respect the laws. He passed away while in Paris trying to
to convince the authorities and particularly Colbert, minister of Louis XIV, about the
potentialities of the nascent colony.
