1776. Birth of Jean-Pierre Boyer:
Port-au-Princien of good origin, Jean-Pierre Boyer who became president of Haiti at
the death of General Alexandre Pétion, born on the formerly known property
under the name of Boyer, and located on Rue du Peuple et du Calvaire. Former commander
of the district of Port-au-Prince; former private secretary to Pétion, he
adopted the daughter of the latter and officially took under her roof the partner assigned to her
of the latter, Miss Joutte Lachenais. He went down in history as the one who accepted
the ordinance of Charles X (See: 17 April 1825; 11 July 1825), which governed the island
entire longevity.
1804. Jean-Jacques Dessalines accepted the title of emperor:
First acclaimed as emperor by the soldiers of the 4th half-brigade, the generals
followed suit by signing a petition presented on January 21, 1805
as an act of appointment. Today, and a little more than two months after the
proclamation of independence, Dessalines, in a proclamation accepted the
title of emperor and announced the direction he intended to give to the new nation
of which he assumes paternity.
«The supreme rank you raise me tells me that I have become the father of
my fellow citizens, of whom I was the defender."
In this proclamation, he announced his intention to renounce the establishment
of a hereditary empire:
«I formally renounce the unfair use of passing my power to my
faimme.”
The coronation ceremony took place on October 8, 1804 and the Constitution was
promulgated on 20 May 1805.
1906. Birth in Port-au-Prince of François Savain:
Haitian novelist and painter, Francois Savain is the author of La Case de Damballah
published in 1939. He was one of the decorators at the 1949 Universal Exhibition in Port-
Prince. He died in 1973.
