1794. The English attack and occupy Léogâne:
The French colonists, to denounce the proclamation of general liberty decreed
by the commissioners Sonthonax and Polvérel (27 August 1793), signed with
England, then at war with their metropolis, a treaty of intervention. This treaty
gave some legitimacy to the repeated attacks of English troops against
the French settlements and the occupation of certain cities on the South Peninsula
including Jeremiah, Tiburon, and, on that day, Léogâne.
2005. Attack on the prison of Port-au-Prince:
This attack, carried out in broad daylight, under the eyes of several witnesses, took place
which resulted in the death of a prison officer and the escape of several prisoners,
including former Prime Minister Yvon Neptune and his Minister of the Interior, Jocelyn
Palermo. The latter returned a few hours later, after having
requested and obtained mediation from the Chilean embassy.
