1807. Election of Alexandre Pétion by the Senate:
The first Haitian head of state bearing the title of president, Pétion was elected by 13
votes on 17 for a period of four years.

 


1915. Swearing in of President Vilbrun Guillaume Sam:
General Vilbrun Guillaume Sam, arrived in Port-au-Prince at the end of the month of
February, forced the National Assembly to elect him president (7 March 1915). The day
even upon his swearing in, he demanded the arrest of several compatriots
under the pretext of a political plot.

 


1983. Visit of Pope John Paul II to Haiti:
A visit that lasted only a few hours, but which will have serious repercussions
on the country. Indeed, during a mass concelebrated near the Port-au-Prince airport in the presence of Haitian dignitaries including President Jean-Claude Duvalier,
the Pope had to declare: "Something must change here."


2004. Appointment of Gérard Latortue as head of the primature:
Appointed by the "Council of Wise Men," Gérard Latortue, a former official of the
United Nations and long-time resident of the United States, in the position of first
minister replaced Yvon Neptune, who was kept in this position after Aristide’s departure, the
February 29.

 

2020. An armed group began searching for Joseph Jouthe, a prime minister who
had just been installed:
This mysterious group of armed individuals who called themselves "Ghosts 509" carried
hoods and police clothing and was accompanied by individuals in plain clothes
also armed. He said he was looking for the new Prime Minister Joseph
Jouthe. Erecting a barricade of burning tires in front of the private residence of
the latter, he terrorized the residents of the neighborhood by firing shots and
vandalizing vehicles.
This group invoked, to motivate their actions, the recognition of the union of
police and the reintegration of their brothers in arms, dismissed on February 18, 2020.
