1878. Attempted coup d'état against General-President Boisond Canal:
Taking advantage of the absence of the president on tour in the South, General Louis Tanis,
Commander of the Department of the West, attempted a coup. He was routed by
the president’s friends in the capital.


1990. Ertha Pascal-Trouillot became Temporary President:
The first woman to take charge of executive power. She will organize the
elections of December 16, 1990 which brought Jean Bertrand Aristide to power.


2014. Signing of the El Rancho Agreement:
From the name of the hotel where it was signed, this document was the result of an attempt to
dialogue between several sectors of the political class, including the Executive, the parliament
under the auspices of the first Haitian cardinal, Archbishop Chibly Langlois. At its publication,
it was, however, not well received by sectors that had
participated in the negotiations and provoked many debates. The government led people to believe
that the ministerial reshuffle of April 2, 2014 met one of its requirements
