1801. Creation of the Constituent Assembly to draft the Constitution of 1801:
Having become the undisputed leader of the island and wanting to give it a constitution, Toussaint
Louverture gathered some men from both parts of the island to fill
this task. Eight men were then chosen. Four from the western part:
Bernard Borgella, Lacour, Viard, and Raymond; and four from the eastern part: Roxas,
Munoz, Monceibo and Morillas. 

 

1802. Founding of the town of Marchand:
This city, which today bears the name of Dessalines, the father of the homeland, was the
Haiti’s first capital under the First Empire. It was once called Marchand
by the name of a settler who owned a house on this site before
the arrival of Dessalines.
