1896.- Election of General Tirésias Augustin Simon Sam to the presidency:
Elected by the National Assembly, Sam, who was then minister of war under the
Government of Hyppolite, inherited an economic crisis due to the extravagance of
the latter. He called on prominent politicians who did not know,
however, to stem the crisis.
1995.- Visit of U.S. President William (Bill) Jefferson Clinton to Haiti:
Second American president to visit Haiti (see: 5 July 1934), Bill Clinton and his
administration were the promoters of President Aristide’s return (see: 15
October 1994). The latter had been overthrown by a coup d'état on the night of 29
as of September 30, 1991 and had spent three years in exile. On that day, the army
American gives way to the UN intervention force.
