2000. Assassination of Jean L. Dominique:
Aged 69 years, Jean Léopold Dominique, director of Radio Haïti Inter and
famous political commentator in his country, was shot dead while he
went to his work. His constant commitment to democracy had
earned exile several times. The assassins are still out there.
2001. National Press Day:
President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, during a meeting with members of the
press in connection with the commemoration of the 1st anniversary of the assassination of the
Director General of Radio Haiti Jean Dominique, announced that April 3 would be
now decreed National Press Day in Haiti, in memory of the
journalist Jean Léopold Dominique, murdered on 3 April 2000 by bandits
armed. Yet this proclamation was not adopted by the journalists
Haitians who prefer to celebrate "World Press Freedom Day" the
May 3, and the "Latin American Press Day", on June 7.
2024. Agreement signed by representatives of key sectors of national life in
view of the transition period:
Entitled "Political agreement for a peaceful and orderly transition," this document
establishes the procedure to be followed during the transition period leading up to the
presidential and legislative elections before February 2026.
