She was quickly choked, but it was the beginning of difficulties for the president who
was becoming less and less popular.
1900. Birth of Dumarsais Estimated:
The last president of Haiti to be elected by the National Assembly, Dumarsais
governed Haiti from August 16, 1946 to May 10, 1950, when he was overthrown by the
military.
1930. Election of Louis Eugène Roy as president:
Elected by the Council of State as provisional president with a good mandate
specific, that of organizing legislative elections and thus reconstituting the
legislative chambers dismissed twice by the occupier.
1971. Death of Dr. François Duvalier:
Elected by universal suffrage on 22 September 1957 (see: Presidential election),
François Duvalier was sworn in on October 22, 1957. In 1964, the Assembly
Nationale made him the 6th president for life of Haiti. Upon his death, his son Jean-Claude,
then aged 18, succeeded him as head of the executive.
Some claimed that he would have died well before that date. These funerals had
place on April 24.
