Henri Christophe made his submission to General Leclerc, leader of the French expedition
Henri Christophe had been the first to follow the order of Toussaint Louverture at his
generals, reduce the city under their command to ashes rather than welcome
the French. He set fire to the city of Cape Town upon the arrival of Leclerc’s troops.
a month later, he let himself be taken in by the latter’s charm operation and
came to the French after a short interview with Leclerc in Upper Cape.
Retaining his rank for a while, he quickly realized the
strategy of the French who simply wanted to neutralize the black leaders, for
then deport them. He rallied to Dessalines who, on October 23, 1802, had raised the
standard of the revolt
