1902. Abdication of Tirésias Simon Sam:
"The shootings (of the day before)... have convinced him that his safety is no longer assured, and
that it is preferable for him to leave the country on the same day. Since Olinde Rodriguez, a
French steam is in the harbour (of Port-au-Prince), he requests that Mrs. Sam and
to be taken there under the effective protection of the diplomatic corps." His
departure was followed by a civil war between the partisans of General Nord Alexis and
those of Anténor Firmin.


1946.- Legislative elections:
37 deputies and 21 senators will be elected, and will be responsible for drafting a
new constitution and choose a new president. On this day, the country is then
led by a military junta that had taken power on January 11 and expelled the
President Elie Lescot.


1984. Death of Maurice Sixto, renowned Haitian storyteller and diseur
international:
Born in Gonaives on May 23, 1919, Maurice Sixto left us on this day afterwards
from a tragic fire.
