1493. Christopher Columbus named "Admiral of the Ocean":
After treading the new island he named Hispaniola. Christopher Columbus
returned to Spain where he was carried in triumph. The Catholic kings Ferdinand and
Isabella awarded him the title of "Admiral of the Ocean," viceroy, and governor of
all the lands he had trodden.
1790. Promulgation by the French colonists of a constitution openly
independentist:
The members of the Assembly of Saint Marc constituted on April 14, 1790 and constituted

1891. Coup attempt in Port-au-Prince:
It was Corpus Christi Day, when Florvil Hyppolite and members of his
government was attending the ceremony of this solemnity, General Sully
Guerrier tried to help by attacking the national penitentiary with a view to
to release the political prisoners. The government of Florvil Hyppolite surrendered
easily controlled the situation and later made several arrests and
summary executions.
