1953. Consecration of Bishop Rémy Augustin:
First Haitian bishop and first black bishop born and residing outside the
African continent, Mgr. Rémy Augustin, auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince was appointed to this position by Pope Pius XII on 8 April 1953. Exiled in 1961 after
having been briefly the administrator of the Archbishopric of Port-au-Prince, he returned in
Haiti in 1966 and became titular bishop of Port-de-Paix, a post he held until
his resignation on 22 February 1982. He passed away on 29 March 1983.
