1844. The city of Hinche returned to the Haitians:
City forming part of the Spanish part following the Treaty of Aranjuez signed between the
France and Spain on April 12, 1779, it was conquered by Toussaint Louverture at the
name of France in 1794. Upon the proclamation of their independence, the
Dominicans made it a city of their territory, but one month more, on that day, a
column of the regiment of the Marmelade National Guard seized it. She
again became Haitian.
1988. President Leslie Manigat unceremoniously fires the head of the Forces
Armies of Haiti, Lieutenant General Henri Namphy:
Reason given: Transfer of army officers and senior commanders without agreement
prior to the executive, an action "violating constitutional norms", according to the
President Manigat. The general was then placed under house arrest. Three days
Later, officers and supporters freed him and handed him power.
The Manigat experiment, which began on 7 February 1988, is ending: a new
president takes the path of exile and a government composed solely of
military established with Henri Namphy as president.
