1793. Defeat of the Legion of Equality commanded by André Rigaud:
Composed of mulattos who fought for the respect of the decree of April 4, 1792 and
black slaves to whom Rigaud had promised freedom if they pledged to fight against
their masters, the Legion of Equality, an army set up by the commissioners
Sonthonax and Polvérel, clashed with the white planters on the Habitation Desrivaux,
near Pestel in the Grande Anse. She was defeated and Rigaud ended up with more
300 deaths in his camp.
