Heavily armed, 52 rebels led by Charles de Delva and Ermane Robin,
stormed the national palace. The president ran away and
refugia at the French consulate.
The next day, General Charles Oscar Etienne, chief of police in Port-au-Prince,
had political prisoners held in the national penitentiary massacred, including
the former president of Haiti, Oreste Zamor.
These events became the prelude to one of the most humiliating periods of
