08-14 August 14th Bois-Caiman ceremony

📅 1791. Bois-Caiman ceremony:
Great voodoo ceremony bringing together slaves from the vicinity of Morne Rouge (Department
from the North) under the direction of a slave named Boukman, priest of voodoo. A week, more
Later, a slave revolt broke out in the north, marking the beginning of the War of Independence.

Le Bois Caïman was part of the Lenorman Mézi plantation in Morne Rouge (Department of
North).

 

📅 1909. Order authorizing the formation of the Electric Lighting Company of the cities of Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien:
First step towards electric lighting in Port-au-Prince. As early as July 1910, the company
installed nearly 250 lamps in the streets of the capital, and on Saturday the following August 27th during a
official ceremony and the cries of "Vie le progrès", the city was, for the first time, illuminated at
the help of lamps powered by electric current. The introduction of electricity into the
Private houses had to wait a year. We were then under the government of Antoine Simon.

 

📅 2021. The Southern Peninsula (3 departments) shaken by an earthquake.
Saturday, August 14, 2021 at 8:29, local time, the South Peninsula, which includes the departments of the
Grand'Anse du Sud et des Nippes was strongly shaken by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 on
the Richter scale. Its epicenter was located at 13.5 km (8.4 miles) from the SSE of the city of Petit-Trou
Nippes (18.4079°North / 73.4753°West) and only 10 km deep.
The toll is heavy.
