📅 1791. Revolt of the slaves of Saint-Domingue:
On the night of August 22 to 23, 1791, slaves from the French colony of Saint-Domingue,
raise against their masters. The revolt is led by Boukman, a voodoo priest, who a
week before had prepared the spirits and concluded a blood pact during a ceremony
vodou (night of August 14, 1791). This revolt marked the beginning of a long period of taking of
conscience, of emancipation and which was to lead to the independence of Haiti on January 1, 1804.

📅 1963. The parliament convened in extraordinary session grants full powers to the president
François Duvalier:
A few months later, Duvalier would proclaim himself president for life with the right to appoint his
successor.
