1918. Abolition of corvée:
Established under the government of Fabre Geffrard with legal integration into the
Rural Code of October 27, 1864, but never applied, the corvée became, from July

1916, a tool in the hands of the American occupier to serve himself, without remuneration,
peasant labor in the construction of roads and other
infrastructure.
Abused by corrupt magistrates and members of the gendarmerie who
reduced to a kind of forced labor for those who could not avoid it
for a lease, the chore was very unpopular and looked like the ultimate
exploitation of the dispossessed by the occupier. On this day, Major Alexander S. Williams,
the head of the gendarmerie decided to abolish it. But the damage was done.

1991. Aristide denounces the putschists of his exile:
Aristide, overthrown the day before by a group of soldiers and taken refuge in Venezuela,
calls for an "international intervention." It was still too early that day,
to find out how the United States and the international community were doing
to respond to such a request.
