1802. Charles Bélair and his wife Suzanne are shot:
After being sentenced by a French court-martial for taking up arms
against the French expedition soldiers, Charles Belair and his wife Suzanne,
better known as Sanite, were shot in Cape Town by a detachment
military.
Charles Bélair was the nephew of Toussaint Louverture, who made him his aide de
Camp and his lieutenant. He had done, like Dessalines and many others, his
submission to Leclerc, but rebelled at the news of the restoration of slavery
authorized in June by Bonaparte.
1975. Death of Bishop Albert-Marie Guiot, smm:
Born on September 7, 1896 in Pontchâteau in France, Mgr. Guiot, priest of the
Compagnie de Marie, better known in Haiti as "Montfortains", was the
second titular bishop of the diocese of Port-de-Paix. Archbishop Paul-Maire Le Bihain,
of the same religious congregation, having been the first titular. Three years later
his death, his coadjutor, Mons. Rémy Augustin, the first Haitian bishop, he
succeeded.
